Done. At least I've got the files (text & cover) print-ready and on their way. This was a very smooth project. Only a few personality conflicts and a little bit of compromise. I try to block out the technical glitches and the time the keyer forgot to back-up the files...I put that behind me. Oh and the dingbat (no I'm not talking about the editor) thing was a pain. There's always something.
All in all my, team did a great job. We met our deadline. We stayed on schedule (for the most part). We managed to give everyone what they needed (almost when they needed it) and I'm pretty sure we produced a quality book.

Proofread is complete, May has applied final corrections and changes. The prelims have been proof-read and also checked out by Dot. There was some confusion about the font of the running heads but I think we worked it out without anyone getting hurt. May printed off the changed pages and we slotted them into the seconds. I'm waiting on final approval from editorial and we just might get this one out ahead of time.
I confirmed page count and specs with the printer. We are good to go.

May has been fine-tuning the text and balancing pages. This is where she really takes her time. It's good in the long run, but it drives me crazy. The second cover layout is complete. Fresh Eyes caught a big mistake that slipped through editorial review... But by the end of the day we got final approval. It's a good cover, and it's ready to go. Whew.

Second pages are ready. A bunch of review quotes were sent down. Arty is working them into the cover. There is a big discussion about the 'dingbat.' I think I handled it okay. Sometimes you have to equate the changes to dollars and cents for anyone to get it. Time is money.

Busy week.
Proofread of first pages is done. Author, Editor and Proofreader have each had their first pass. I compiled all the changes and sent them off to May. I got in touch with the printer to make sure we're still on the schedule. We had a nice chat about the Napa Valley and then we talked specs.

May has first pages ready. Wahoo. She was fast this time. Getting Freddie to tag was a great idea. The cover's first layout is ready for proofing. F.E. in to proofread the first pass. Dot checks the first pages for design application. Things look good so far.

So today Arty had a bunch of front panels ready. T's photo shoot went well - 3 days, he said, and a nice drive in the country.
Editorial took the office tour to get opinions. Remarkably everyone was keen on the same shot. T really came through on this one.
Arty will have first layout soon and we'll have a cover to send to Catalogue.

Text has been keyed & tagged, wahoo, and has gone to May for typesetting. Who knew a dingbat could cause so much fuss. Oh ... and somehow it's production's fault that the Catalogue copy isn't done yet. Whatever.

Happy Valentines Day :)
Copy Edit complete - only 2 days late. No shock there. I brought the text to Freddie for keying and tagging (he was wearing a hot pink sweater for Valentine's day- cute!). So the author is in town - that's okay, she's cool. But . . . she has this idea about the cover that sales/marketing have already said NO WAY to. It's a bit sticky. Arty the cover designer came up with some ideas that didn't go over well. At least we know what NOT to do. I'm going to book T. for a cover shoot - I'll send him the first couple chapters, so he knows what we're dealing with.

Sample pages are pretty much done. Dot did a great job. The look is fresh and crisp. Totally unlike what editorial wanted but soooo much better. Prelim map is done too. Things are looking good. I sure hope they get that ms to us soon...

I mediated a face-to-face between the text designer and the editor today. We worked out most of the specs and I made sure Dot has everything she needs to get sample page designs put together easily. The editor wants it to look like ................... and Dot is always wanting to try something new. Hopefully that won't complicate things too much.

Let the party begin. Editorial tells me the copy edits on 'the big one' are almost complete. Dot is going to design the text for this one. We scheduled a meeting to brainstorm text treatments and determine q & q issues for Wednesday.

I met with editorial today to discuss a new book at the acquisition stage. It's a big one, 130,000 words. We set up a tentative production schedule and worked out cost details. They want this one in the Spring Catalogue, release date May. It's tight but editorial assures me it is a good ms and copy edit will be completed by January.
